How it works for businesses like yours

Illustrative examples informed by the types of applications we see. Figures and circumstances are designed to explain the process — not records of any specific client or approval.

Each example shows what supports the funding amount, what documents to prepare, how Mutualism helps and what could prevent a match. Revenue, contract value and collateral alone are not approval criteria.

Illustrative example Equipment and expansionR500,000

1. A butchery preparing to expand

Established trading business

The business and the need

A butchery with an established customer base records R2 million in annual sales and R1.7 million in operating expenses. It owns some equipment and wants R500,000 for refrigeration, production improvements and stock.

Does the amount fit the business

The R300,000 difference is roughly R25,000 a month before tax, existing debt repayments and other cash needs — not all available for a new loan. A funder checks whether the actual cash left, the repayment term and a realistic expansion plan support the requested amount. R2 million in turnover does not automatically qualify the business for R500,000.

How Mutualism helps

We help the owner organise the application, separate essential equipment from other costs and identify suitable funders. The funder decides the amount and terms.

Evidence to prepare

  • Financial statements and management accounts
  • Business bank statements supporting sales
  • Existing debt and repayments schedule
  • Asset and ownership schedule
  • Supplier quotes and a repayment forecast

What could prevent a match

A shop trading for two months at R20,000 monthly sales has not demonstrated a comparable ability to support R500,000. Without other credible repayment evidence, the next step may be building a trading record or reducing the request.

2. A waste business seeking R20 million

Established operator

The business and the need

A waste-management company with R30 million in annual revenue and a delivery record is preparing to service a signed R60 million commercial contract over three years. It seeks R20 million: R16 million for vehicles and equipment and R4 million for mobilisation.

Does the amount fit the business

R60 million is the contract's total revenue, not cash available today. The application must show actual committed work, when it can be billed, when payment is expected and the margin after all costs. A tender award or framework without confirmed work may not support the same request.

How Mutualism helps

We help divide the requirement into equipment, mobilisation and ongoing operating costs, then identify funders with the relevant mandate. One facility may not cover everything — a funder may prefer asset finance, a smaller first phase or direct supplier payments. We coordinate information and feedback.

Evidence to prepare

  • Historical financials and bank statements
  • Signed contract and confirmed work schedule
  • Customer payment terms
  • Costed delivery plan and equipment quotes
  • Current debt, asset ownership, operating permits, insurance

What could prevent a match

A tender award or framework without confirmed, scheduled work may not support this request. Forecasts must allow for late payment, cost increases and delivery delays. The first feedback estimate is not a deadline for closing a transaction of this size.

3. A services firm bridging its payment cycle

Professional services firm

The business and the need

A professional-services firm has several years of trading and a R4.5 million service agreement over three years. Staff and subcontractors must be paid while completed work goes through monthly approval and invoicing. The firm requests R300,000 to bridge that payment cycle.

Does the amount fit the business

The full R4.5 million cannot be treated as an invoice ready for collection. A funder needs verified work, approved timesheets or milestones, actual invoices and the chain of payment. A forecast of future fees carries less weight than verified, undisputed work with a credible payment date.

How Mutualism helps

We help present the cash-flow gap clearly and assemble the evidence for funders that understand contract or invoice finance. We connect the requested amount and term to the verified payment cycle and coordinate questions about the customer, invoice or costs.

Evidence to prepare

  • The service agreement
  • Approved timesheets or completed milestones
  • Invoices and customer confirmation
  • Current debtors, creditors and bank statements
  • Existing debt schedule and invoice assignment details

What could prevent a match

Unsigned work, disputed invoices, unclear payment responsibility or repayments that depend on future work not yet secured may leave no suitable funding route.

4. A supplier funding a confirmed order

Established supplier

The business and the need

An established supplier receives a confirmed R600,000 order from a business customer. The customer pays after delivery, so the supplier needs R300,000 to buy stock while covering the remaining delivery costs itself.

Does the amount fit the business

A funder would want to verify the order with the buyer, check the supplier quotation and see how delivery costs will be covered. There must be enough margin after all costs, including finance, for the request to hold up. A verbal promise or pipeline opportunity is not the same as a current, verified order.

How Mutualism helps

We help assemble the order, costs and delivery plan for suitable funders. Depending on the arrangement, approved funds may be paid directly to the supplier.

Evidence to prepare

  • Confirmed order and customer details
  • Supplier quotes and stock availability confirmation
  • Complete delivery budget
  • Proof of the business cash contribution
  • Bank statements, financial records and existing obligations

What could prevent a match

A thin or negative margin, an unverified order, an unreliable repayment date or an unfunded contribution can undermine the request even when the customer is well known.

5. A logistics business with existing debt

Logistics operator

The business and the need

A logistics operator with recurring commercial customers, a working fleet and meaningful annual turnover requests R750,000 for fuel, repairs and operating costs while awaiting customer payments. It already has vehicle finance and a working-capital facility in place.

Does the amount fit the business

High turnover and a large debtor balance do not show how much cash is available for another repayment. A funder separates current, collectible invoices from disputed or overdue amounts and examines every existing repayment and claim over assets. Adding a smaller loan may increase pressure if the business needs a larger restructuring.

How Mutualism helps

We help map the funding need and existing obligations before approaching suitable partners. Where appropriate, we look for a funder able to consider the full requirement rather than sending the same small request to every provider.

Evidence to prepare

  • Current debtors ageing with payment and dispute status
  • Full debt and repayment schedule
  • Existing security and invoice assignments
  • Fleet ownership and finance details
  • Financial records, bank statements and a cash-flow forecast

What could prevent a match

Initial feedback may call for better invoice evidence, a different structure or a revised amount. If one funder declines, we explain the feedback and assess whether another suitable route remains. An introductory discussion is not an approval.
